Veterinary Meat Hygiene Inspector (VMHI) Position Information 

Please see the information below regarding the position you have applied for. It will be helpful for you to familiarise yourself with the details prior to interview in order for you to prepare any questions that you may wish to ask. 
 
1) Duties and Obligation for the VMHI Position 
This position involves working in various red and white meat abattoirs in England. You will be carrying out carcass and offal post-mortem inspection and assisting the Official Veterinarian in other duties such as hygiene and animal welfare controls. The work will be based around one specific area and a group of plants in which you will be allocated a base plant. On occasion, you may be required to travel to different plants within that location. Please note that all our VMHIs are invited to apply to become an Official Veterinarian should they wish to do so. More information in Section 6. 
 
2) Pay Conditions

When you start your VMHI position, you will start on £10.00 per hour which will subsequently increase as you continue your service with Eville & Jones. Moreover, we also offer a number of benefits with this position which will help to make your life easier as you begin your veterinary career in the UK. 


2.1 Salary

  • When You start: £10.00 per hour, which equates to £19,240 per year 
  • After 6 months: £10.25 per hour, which equates to £19,721 per year 
  • After 12 months: £10.50 per hour, which equates to £20,202 per year 
  • After 18 months: £11.00 per hour, which equates to £21,164 per year

Your salary will be paid every four weeks meaning you will receive thirteen salary payments in a year. 

Please be aware that the salary calculations are based on 37 hours of work per week (which we guarantee). However, a normal working week is usually 40 hours. In addition, you can make an agreement to work extra hours if you would like to. Please bear in mind that the extra hours are paid at the same rate as your salary. 

Please be aware that 3% of your salary will also be deducted to contribute to your pension. Should you prefer to receive this as a salary instead, please inform the company. 
 

2.2 Working Hours 
You will be guaranteed a minimum of 148 hours of work over a four - week period. 


2.3 Contract Period 
This is a permanent position. There is a probationary period of three months during which your performance will be assessed. This period starts from the date that you start to work. 

2.4 Holidays 
You will receive 20 days of paid holiday plus 8 Bank holidays. You also receive an extra day of holiday for each year of service until you reach 25 days plus the 8 bank holidays. 
 
3) Training and Training Costs 

3.1 Training  
The VMHI training course consists of an online module for the theoretical part which takes approximately 24 hours to complete. You can do this part at your own pace but you will need to complete it before coming to the United Kingdom. There will also be a two - day induction at our Leeds office, followed by three to four weeks of practical training in England and so you must be prepared to travel to different locations. The total period of practical training depends on how quickly you will become familiar with the work as a VMHI.  During this period, you will receive training pay of £225.05 per week which includes all statutory deductions.  You can use this training pay to cover all your expenses and meals. 
During training, you will be provided with a company car (should you not have access to a personal car), inspection equipment, protective clothing and a company mobile telephone. We also provide accommodation which is arranged and paid for by the company during this period.  
After your training period has finished and you start to work in your allocated area, you may require us to book the accommodation for the first week to give you more time to find a more permanent place to live. We are more than happy to help with this and we can also provide you with information about the area and the costs of where you will be living. If you need references for renting a house, we are more than happy to provide them. 


3.2 Training Costs 
The theoretical and practical training referred to above are free for those who remain available to commence work at any time following completion of the training course and who subsequently complete a minimum working period of twelve months.   
You will be offered a permanent position after completing your training.  


You ONLY need to pay a training contribution fee of £950 if you do any of the following:

  • Do not accept the position within the three months following completion of training 
  • If you leave the company during the training period before completion  
  • If you leave the company within twelve months of signing your contract 
  • If you are dismissed from the company  

 
4) Car, Mileage and Driving 
As an employee your work could involve a significant amount of travelling. It is therefore essential that you are confident when driving. When you arrive in Leeds, as part of the process, we will offer you the option to undergo a driving assessment with a qualified driving instructor so that you can see how confident you feel driving in England. 


4.1 Car 
To help you perform your duties, the company will provide you with a company car. It is up to you whether you decide to keep the company car after training or if you would prefer to purchase your own.  
If you decide that you would prefer to purchase your own car, the company give you a monthly payment over 12 months which will total to £1,500 for the year. This amount is before Tax and National Insurance deductions. You will receive this for each year of your employment with us whilst you have your own car. Moreover, you will receive 25p per mile for your mileage for the first 433 miles per month and it is then 12p per mile thereafter if you choose to use your own car. This is for work purposes only. 
If you choose to keep the company car, £76.92 will be retained from your four - weekly salary for a period of thirteen payments. This deduction is for any accidental damage to the car that is evident upon its return. Please bear in mind the taxes and insurance are covered by the company and you will receive 12p per mile for your mileage for work purposes only. 
You will be given back £1000 if the car is in the same condition as when you received it. If there is any damage but it amounts to less than the total retained, the remainder amount of money will be paid back to you.  


4.2 Travel Time and Mileage 
You may have to travel up to one hour between where you are living and where your place of work is. Please be prepared to travel long distances as you could be required. Travel time is not paid from home to plant and plant to home; it is paid when travelling between plants and working at more than one plant in a day. 
 
5) Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Registration (RCVS) 
Please be aware that in order to work as a vet in the United Kingdom you need to be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) in the UK.  
Upon an offer of employment, we will help you with your registration with the RCVS in terms of arranging the appointment and assisting you with the correct documentation.  You will need to pay a membership fee to be able to join the RCVS and this has to be renewed every year. However, if you are unable to pay this fee yourself, we will help you with the initial payment where we will make an agreement with you for a deduction of a fixed amount to be paid to the company until you have returned the whole amount back.  Please note that you will need to send all the required documents to us at least one week before coming to the UK to attend the selection assessment. We can also assist you with obtaining the official translation of the required documents.    

 
6) Progression with the Company 
Whilst you are working as a VMHI, when you have gained the necessary knife skills you will be assessed and offered the opportunity to become an Official Veterinarian (OV). Depending on your performance and confidence as a VMHI, you can apply to be selected for the OV course at any time after you have become employed with us.   


The salary conditions as an OV are: 

  • Starting salary of £26,000 per year as a New Official Veterinarian (NOV)
  • £27,000 per year (After you complete your NOV training and become an Official Veterinarian within six - twelve months)
  • £27, 500 per year (at 18 months service after completion of the OV course)
  • £28,000 per year (at 24 months service after completion of the OV course) 

You can progress even further within the company if you decide that you would like to. We will always keep you informed about the opportunities where you may be able to advance to managerial positions. 
 
7) Other Positions   
 
Depending on position availability, your level of English and experience, we may be able to offer you a position in the following veterinary fields: 

  • Tuberculosis (TB) testing (Includes full training provided by Eville & Jones)
  •  
  • Export Certification (Includes full training provided by Eville & Jones)

The conditions for each of these will depend particularly on availability and your level of English. 

8) Interest – free loan facility
In order to assist you with the costs of your first month’s rent when you have found accommodation and the deposit that is usually required, you can take the option of a loan from the company of up to £900 which must be repaid back over nine months when you begin working.
